Getting Started as a Freelance Writer
When I started to imagine myself as a freelance writer, I spend a few weeks trying to find as many details as I could about the job. It is easy to say you will be a professional writter, but very difficult to finally achieve it.
Well, I visited every freelance forum I could find and I subscribed to every relevant blog. The problem was this prosess was that it was time consuming and I get very few relevant info. Thus, I decided to buy a book that can give me step-by-step details about how I should work. The best book that I found in this category was “Getting Started as a Freelance Writer” by Robert W. Bly.
The book covers the gamut of freelance writing tasks. It helped me learn how to start and run my freelance business and gave me tips on how to avoid mistakes that others make.
The contents cover :
- Things you need to know and do before you begin-upfront money, logos, letterhead, business cards, basics of online research, reference books you need to have, organizations worth joining, Websites for writers, and other basics.
- Entry-level assignments-how to get started, setting and negotiating fees, knowing your market, writing winning queries, choosing clips and more.
- Self-promotion-learn how to market to and network effectively with editors, prospective customers, and fellow writers, glean PR tips and discover new venues for promotion.
- Earn big bucks-deciding what to charge, writing copy that sells, beginner tips, creating a Web site, online promotion, blogging and more. Best of all, Bly tells it like it is-not only does he share the best tips and tricks, he’ll also tell you how to handle dissatisfied clients, how to find affordable help, overcoming writer’s block and some of the worst jobs beginning writers should avoid.
Give it a try… I am sure it will help you a lot!
